UNI Men's Track and Field Picked to Win, Women Fourth

ST. LOUIS – UNI men's track and field was picked to finish first in the Missouri Valley Conference Pre-Championship Coaches Poll released by the conference Wednesday.
UNI picked up 77 points in the poll, including seven first-place votes to claim the top spot, just ahead of Illinois State who was picked to finish second with 75 total points and three first-place votes.
The Panthers enter the weekend with the top spot in three events and are ranked second in six events in the current standings, led by Darius King who is ranked first in the shot put and 12th in the NCAA with a season-best school-record throw of 19.58.
Isaiah Trousil and Tayshaun Cooper are ranked first and second in the 200-meter dash and are tied for the second-best time in the 60-meter dash.
The men's 4x400-meter team looks to defend its title and enter the championship with the top mark.
On the women's side, UNI was picked to finish fourth in the poll with 75 total points. Illinois State was the unanimous choice to win the title, picking up all 10 first-place votes. SIU was picked to finish second with 85 total points, Indian State was picked just ahead of UNI with 80 total points.
Four Panthers sit in the top-three of the conference standings led by Taylor Raines who is ranked second in the 200-meter dash and McKayla Cole who is ranked second in the 5k. In the field events, Alanna Nietert is currently third in the weight throw entering the championship.
The championship begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the multi-events and continues through Sunday at the UNI-Dome.
