No. 9 Panthers fall to No. 6 Weber State 29-17

Weber State scored on their first play from scrimmage in a 73-yard touchdown pass and recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that led to a field goal to build a 10-0 lead with 9:58 left in the first quarter.
They turned the first Panther interception of the season into a two-yard touchdown run with 5:43 left in the first to extend the lead to 17-0.
The Panthers got on the board with a 35-yard field goal from Matthew Cook to cut the lead to 17-3 with 2:37 to play in the first. Cook remains perfect on the season and is now 9-9 for the year.
Weber State responded with a field goal in the final minute of the first to go up 20-3 with less than a minute left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats added a touchdown early in the second quarter on a 13-yard pass.
Will McElvain found Isaiah Weston for a 37-yard touchdown in the front corner of the end zone for the lone UNI touchdown of the first half. It was the third touchdown in three games for the Weston. He ended the game four catches for 84 yards. The score cut the Weber lead to 27-10.
The Panther defense put the clamps down in the second half, holding Weber State to negative-seven yards in the third quarter and one total yard in the second half.
UNI found the end zone with 4:04 to play on the two-yard pass to Jaylin James but were unable to recover an onside kick and the Panthers fell in by 12 points.
McElvain ran for a career-high 105 yards on nine attempts to lead all rushers. He was also 16-29 for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Weston and James combined for nine catches, 154 yards and two touchdowns.
The Panther defense held Weber State to just one offensive yard in the second half.
UNI outgained the Wildcats 384 to 285 in the game and tallied 19-14. The Weber State punter pinned the Panthers inside the 20 five times, including four times inside the five. The lone Weber State points in the second half came on a safety after a bad snap on the five-yard line after a deep Weber State punt.
The Panthers fall to 2-2 on the year while the Wildcats improve to 2-2.
UNI opens the Valley Football season next Saturday in the Dome, hosting Youngstown State at 4 p.m.
NOTES:
-Matthew Cook remains perfect on the season at 9-9.
-Will McElvain is the first UNI player to pick up a 100-yard rushing game during the 2019 season.
-The Panthers held FCS National Freshman of the Year Josh Davis to just 19 yards rushing on 10 attempts.
-The UNI defense held Weber State to -7 yards of offense in the third quarter and 1 yard of offense in the second half.
-The Panthers record the most offensive yards of the season so far at 384. The previous best was 367 against Southern Utah.
-Chris Kolarevic returned to action for the first time since the South Dakota game on 10/13/2018. He recorded a sack and four total tackles in limited action.
-UNI outgained Weber State 384-285 and recorded 19 first downs to Weber State's 14.
- The Wildcats record 26 percent (73 of 285) of their offense on the first play from scrimmage.
