UNI Wrestling Sends 2 to Big 12 Championship Finals

TULSA, Oklahoma — UNI wrestling is sending two Panthers back to the finals for a chance to repeat as Big 12 champions, while four more remain in the hunt for a third-place finish.

Taylor Lujan and Drew Foster earned spots in the finals, notching bonus points along the way for UNI at 174 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively. The two both won Big 12 championships last year.

Lujan will face Oklahoma State's Jacobe Smith, who ended Lujan's run at the national championships last year with a 10-8 decision. Lujan beat Smith in a 10-7 decision in the semifinals of the 2018 Big 12 Championships.

Foster will have his chance to avenge his dual loss earlier this year to Iowa State's No. 11 Sam Colbray of Iowa State. He faces top-seeded Colbray, who Foster did beat by major decision early in the season.

Jay Schwarm notched two falls at 125 pounds to take control of No. 7 on the all-time list for most career pins of any Panther in UNI history. He now has 32 falls. He joined Bryce Steiert (157) in the semifinals, but both were bumped to the consolations.

Jack Skudlarczyk knocked off the third seed at 133 pounds. He will face No. 16 Matt Schmitt of West Virginia, who is seeded fourth. Five Big 12 wrestlers will advance from his weight class.

At 141 pounds, Josh Alber opened the tournament with a loss and will have a chance to avenge that match tomorrow against Chris Sandoval of Northern Colorado.

With a deep weight class at 149 pounds, Max Thomsen will have the chance to compete for a true placing match to go to the national championships. Seven wrestlers from the Big 12 will advance.

Three other Panthers were eliminated after the first day of competition. The conference did lose one allocation at 165 pounds with a lineup change from Oklahoma State.
