UNI Softball Caps Tournament Play in Kentucky

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Panthers cap off their pre-conference tournament slate with the 2019 Racer Classic in Murray, Kentucky.
UNI was originally scheduled to play five games over three days, but after a scheduling change the Panthers will play four games this weekend, two on Sunday and two on Monday.
The Panthers open up on Saturday against Purdue Fort Wayne, at 10:00 a.m., and take on Murray State at 2:30 p.m. later in the day. UNI has never faced off against Purdue Fort Wayne or Murray State.
On Sunday, the Panthers play Purdue Fort Wayne, at 9:00 a.m., and square off with Samford at 11:15 a.m. In the all-time series between UNI and Samford, the Panthers are 2-1, with the last Northern Iowa win coming in 1996.
Olivia Brooks is the team leader in batting average (.489) through the first 14 games. Brooks leads the Panthers in hits (23), is second in RBIs (11) and is tied for first in OBP (.547).
Shortstop Sammey Bunch had been a force on offense for UNI, as the junior infielder leads the Panthers in runs (19), XBHs (9), slugging (.875) and walks (9). Bunch is also tied with Ashley Chesser for the team lead in RBIs (12).
Chesser has brought the power early in the season, as she pairs her .300 batting average with six XBHs. The junior catcher is also second on the team with three home runs, one of only three UNI players with a home run this season.
The Panthers are 5-3 in tournaments held in Kentucky under head coach Ryan Jacobs. In the last four games in Kentucky tournaments UNI is 2-2.
Following the 2019 Racer Classic, the Panthers open up conference play at Indiana State on March 16. UNI will play a doubleheader with the Sycamores on Sat., March 16 and will play one game on Sun., March 17.
