SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The No. 11 UNI football team didn't score in the first quarter but made up for it the rest of the way en route to a 29-6 road win over Missouri State Saturday.
The Panthers racked up 321 yards of offense and held Missouri State to just 158 yards, including just 16 yards rushing.
Isaiah Weston continued his outstanding play, catching five passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the win. It is his seventh consecutive game with a touchdown. He now has five touchdowns in the last two games and 10 on the season. He has also passed 100-yards receiving for the fourth consecutive game and over 150 yards for the second consecutive game.
Defensively, UNI racked up five sacks and nine tackles for loss, accounting for negative 35 yards. Austin Evans recovered a pair of fumbles for the Panthers, both on special teams plays which led to nine Panther points.
In the kicking game, freshman kicker Matthew Cook got back on track with three made field goals, including a 49-yard field goal to get the Panthers on the board early in the second quarter.
He hit a 22-yard field goal with 8:19 left to play to put UNI up 6-0, but a fumble on the ensuing kick return gave UNI a short field. UNI capitalized on a six-yard run by Will McElvain, the first rushing touchdown of his career to put the Panthers up 12-0.
Weston got on the board with 3:54 to play in the second with a 46-yard touchdown pass over the middle for the touchdown, which put UNI up 19-0 at the half.
Cook hit a 38-yard field goal with 5:57 to play in the third to put UNI up 22-0. After a quick three-and-out by Missouri State, McElvain found Weston on the first play of the drive to score a 70-yard drive, the longest reception of his career and the longest pass for McElvain.
Missouri State scored a touchdown with 8:55 to play, but it wouldn't be enough as the Panthers cruised to the 23-point win.
UNI is now 5-3 on the year and 3-1 in MVFC play, which will be tied for second in the league after the completion of today's Valley games.
The Panthers are on the road next week at Illinois State before closing out the season with two of the final three games at home.
