CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Former UNI football player Xavier Williams just missed an opportunity to play for the Super Bowl when his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, lost to New England in overtime of the AFC Championship game. It turns out that there will still be a UNI alum on the field, however, he will be wearing black and white.
UNI football alum Fred Bryan will act as the umpire for the Super Bowl. Bryan has been an official in the NFL since 2009. He has worked every game up to the AFC Championship game last season and acted as an alternate to the biggest game of them all, but this will be his first Super Bowl.
He was featured last year on UNIPanthers.com and said, "I've worked seven playoff games and have been an alternate in a Super Bowl – but it wasn't on the field. My goal is to get on the field for a Super Bowl."
He is a 1982 graduate of UNI and played defensive tackle where he saw action in 33 games and made 69 career tackles. He also registered two quarterback sacks and recovered a pair of fumbles for the Panthers.
He currently works as area director of adult services for Hennepin County in Minnesota, along with his officiating career.
