CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – UNI Volleyball fell in straight sets to No. 10 Creighton 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 Saturday in the final set of the Illini Classic at Huff Hall on the campus of the University of Illinois.
The match avenged a sweep of the Jays (8-3) by the Panthers (6-6) in the first match of the season.
UNI struggled out to the gate, allowing Creighton to build a 5-1 lead early in the first set. The Jays never looked back and picked up the nine-point first set win.
In the second, the scoring was point-for-point early but tied at 14, Creighton went on a 5-1 run to take a 19-15 lead and never looked back.
The third set was followed a similar script to the first, Crieghton jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never allowed UNI to get into a rhythm offensively. The Jay closed the match on an 8-1 run.
Piper Thomas led UNI with 11 kills. For the first time this season, Karlie Taylor failed to reach double digits in kills, ending with seven. Rachel Koop had a match-high 23 assists and Kendyl Sorge tallied 17 digs.
ON TO THE MVC
The Panthers open Missouri Valley Conference play next week on the road against Drake in Des Moines. UNI has one non-conference game remaining on the schedule, an Oct. 21 home match against a tough Marquette team.
TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE
The non-conference schedule takes a month-long hiatus, but even without the Marquette match in the mix, the Panthers have already played one of the toughest slates of any team in the country. Massey Rating currently has the schedule as the sixth-toughest in all of the NCAA. The scheduled includes nine matches against teams that were ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Poll.
UP NEXT
The Panthers open MVC at Drake on Friday. The Bulldogs are 11-1 on the year but have a pair of matches yet to play on the schedule.
