
Panthers Split Day One at Illini Classic

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The UNI Panther volleyball team split a pair of matches at the University of Illinois Illini Classic at Huff Hall in Champaign, sweeping Lipscomb 3-0 before falling to No. 8 Illinois 3-0.
UNI 3, Lipscomb 0
The Panthers took control early and never let the Bison gain a foothold to earn a 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 win.
UNI built a 7-2 lead and never trailed in the first set. The second set started with a 6-0 Panther run. Lipscomb battled back, but couldn't make up the difference and UNI won the second set 25-20. Lipscomb led 1-0 in the third set, the only lead of the match for the Bison, but UNI rattled off three straight points and never looked back en route to the 25-16 third set win.
Karlie Taylor and Piper Thomas tallied a match-high 14 kills. Thomas tallied a .520 attack percentage with just one error. As a team, the Panthers notched 47 kills to just 10 errors. Rachel Koop tallied 33 assists to pace the offense.
Defensively, the Panthers tallied 50 digs, led by Kendyl Sorge with 10. Thomas notched five blocks and Inga Rotto tallied four.
No. 8 Illinois 3, UNI 0
The Panthers struggled in the first set but battled for the final two before falling to eighth-ranked Illinois 25-13, 26-24, 25-21.
The Illini women took control of the first set with a 5-0 run to take a 7-0 lead and never looked back en route to the 25-13 win.
UNI went up 3-1 in the second set before Illinois went on a 6-1 run to build a 7-4 advantage. The Illini built an 18-10 advantage, but the Panthers rallied to tie the set at 24. Illinois' Jacqueline Quade notched a pair of kills to close out the second set 26-24.
In the final set, the Panthers went up 8-2, but the Illini battled back to tie the game at 14. The two teams battled point for point before the Illini won three of the last four points to close out the 25-21 victory.
Taylor led the Panthers with 13 kills, Koop notched 22 assists and Sorge had 10 digs. The match after hitting its best attack percentage of the season, the team hit its worst at just .116.

The Panthers play the final match of the weekend Saturday at 10 a.m. against No. 10 Creighton. UNI swept the Jays in the first meeting of the season.
