Panther Soccer Falls to VCU 2-0

IOWA CITY – Virginia Commonwealth's Kelly Graves scored twice in the second half to break up a scoreless game and lead the Ram's to a 2-0 win over UNI in a neutral-site match at the Iowa Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
Panther goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger held the shutout for 56 minutes before allowing her first goal of the season on a header in the 57th minute. Just seven minutes later, Graves again found the net on an unassisted goal.
VCU outshot UNI 18-8 and 13-5 in shots on goal. Sydney Hayden put a pair of shots on frame and Kelsey Yarrow notched three shots with one on target.
Reichenberger tallied a season-high 11 saves, but couldn't remain unblemished on the season.
Despite the loss, head coach Bruce Erickson knows that Friday's match was about more than getting a result.
"Tonight was a great test for our team," Erickson said. "It was a competitive game, but VCU had great movement and caused us problems we weren't always able to solve. Ultimately, they made good on their opportunities and that was the difference. We'll be better because we played this game."
The Panthers close out the weekend with a match against Central Michigan, Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
