Olejniczak Pitches Panthers to Doubleheader Sweep

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA – The Panthers rode the arm of Emma Olejniczak, Sunday, as they swept their conference doubleheader against the Valparaiso Crusaders.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. Valparaiso Crusaders | Final Score – W, 5-0
Olejniczak got the start for the Panthers in game one of Sunday's doubleheader, going all seven innings for a complete game shutout.
The freshman righty held the Crusaders to one hit and two walks, while striking out seven and picking up her third win of the season.
The first of the Panthers' five runs on the day came in the first inning, on a fielding error by the Valparaiso second baseman. The error allowed Brittney Roby to race home, giving UNI the early lead.
Kennedy Bailey and Abby Downs tacked on RBIs in the third inning. Bailey doubled down the right field line, scoring Sammey Bunch. Downs hit an opposite-field single, which allowed Bailey to score from second base.
Bunch extended her team lead in home runs (4) and RBIs (25) in the seventh inning, as lined a ball over the center field fence for a two-run homer. The Panthers have won three out of four games this season that Bunch has homered in.
All three of Olejniczak's wins this season have been complete game shutout victories. The freshman's last shutout win came against Kennesaw State earlier this season.

Olejniczak got the start in game two of the doubleheader, with Brooke Craig coming on in relief of her.
The first-year pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and one walk, while striking out one batter. Olejniczak did not allow a run in her start, which was her fifth straight pitching appearance without allowing an earned run.
Craig, pitched three and a third innings in relief, allowing two earned runs while also striking out two batters. The junior pitcher picked up the win in relief, which marked her tenth victory of the season.
UNI scored five runs in the third inning, which gave the team the early lead. Bunch singled up the middle, which brought home Roby for the Panthers' first run of the game. A Brittney Krodinger single to right and Adara Opiola sacrifice fly tacked on two more runs for UNI. Courtney Krodinger's base hit to right center allowed two runners to score, supplanting the Panthers with a big lead early in the game.
Opiola launched the ball deep to right center for a two-run home run in the seventh inning, for her first long ball of the season. The round-tripper was also Opiola's first of her career.
UP NEXT –
The Panthers travel home for a mid-week showdown against in-state rival Iowa State, barring any bad weather. UNI and Iowa State will matchup on Wednesday, April 11. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., at the Robinson-Dresser Complex in Cedar Falls.
