UNI IS CELBRATING 50 YEARS OF WOMEN'S ATHLETICS IN THE 2018-19 ACADEMIC YEAR. CONTINUE TO WATCH FOR FEATURES ON WOMEN WHO HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE OR ARE CURRENTLY IMPACTING UNI ATHLETICS.
Â
Â
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Coaching teammates on the field has pushed UNI soccer's Jami Reichenberger onto a new career path.
Â
As the goalkeeper for the Panthers, Reichenberger helps to direct players on the field and understands how positions work as a coach and player.
Â
"Goalkeepers are a different mindset," she said. "When the game is going on, goalkeepers have a combination of natural ability and talent to make tough saves."
Â
Reichenberger has turned her passion for the sport into a career path, working with youth teams back home. Currently, Reichenberger is coaching the Denver High School girls' soccer team for the past few seasons.
Â
"I've always had an interest in coaching," she said "I started my academic career in athletic training and realized I liked the sports more than the medicine."
Â
Reichenberger uses the advice from UNI coaching staff beyond the Panther practice field.
Â
"Bruce and the staff give me great insight that I can use for my team," she said.
Â
Coming from a family of four sisters, Reichenberger followed her siblings into soccer. Two of her sisters played at the college level and everyone helped with practices.
Â
"We are all highly competitive and worked out together," said Reichenberger.
Â
Support from her parents have helped make every game special as they make the seven-plus hour drive from Wichita, Kansas.
Â
The junior college transfer from Butler received options from all over the United States and was cutting her recruitment period off when Reichenberger's mom knew a home had been found.
Â
"I had this feeling of this is where I was meant to be after visiting," said Reichenberger.
Â
Reichenberger reset the Missouri Valley Conference single-season record for shutouts last season with 11. She tops UNI's all-time shutout records with 18.
Â
Although her career has a Panther is coming to an end, Reichenberger still finds herself in the net as she plays for the FC Wichita, a club in her hometown.
Â
"It's crazy and amazing getting to play with the club. I'm playing with girls from all different conferences and went up against a girl from Stanford last season."
