Panther Women's Basketball Tops Upper Iowa 89-41

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Four players scored in double figures, including a double-double from Megan Maahs as the UNI women's basketball team cruised to an 89-41 exhibition win over Upper Iowa Sunday afternoon in the McLeod Center.
The Panthers outrebounded the Peacocks 65-34 and all 13 Panther players that saw the court scored.
Abby Gerrits led the way with 14 points, Maahs notched 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 11 minutes of action, freshman Cynthia Wolf scored 12 points and Ellie Howell added 11. Bre Gunnels grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Panthers shot 35-94 (37.2 percent) from the field and 10-27 (37.0 percent) from the three-point line.
THE TURNING POINT…
With 7:31 left in the first quarter, Upper Iowa's Natalie Dinius hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 5-5. UNI then went on a 10-0 run, including three layups from Karlie Rucker to take a 15-5 run and never looked back.
STATS OF THE GAME…
The Panthers took advantage of their athleticism to outrebound Upper Iowa 65-34. UNI had just one less offensive rebound (33) than Upper Iowa had total rebounds. The discrepancy in the boards led to a huge advantage for the Panthers in second-chance points where UNI outscored UIU 23-2.
The bench was a big factor for UNI, only two players, Nicole Kroeger and Abby Gerrits played more than 20 minutes. The Panther bench outscored the Peacock bench 52-9.
UNI turned 26 UIU turnovers into 32 points.
PLAYER OF THE GAME…
The MVC Preseason All-Conference Honoree showed why she is regarded so highly by the coaches around the conference. Maahs went 6-8 from the field and picked up the double-double in just 11 minutes on the court.
UP NEXT…
UNI hosts Delaware in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT. The game will be the second contest of a doubleheader that starts with a UNI volleyball match against Missouri State at 6 p.m. The basketball game is scheduled to begin at 8:30.
The second round opponent will be determined by the results of the first round.
