
UNI Volleyball Defeats Bears in 5-Set Thriller

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – The UNI volleyball team won a dramatic five set match against the Bears of Missouri State on Saturday night 25-11, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 17-15. The Panthers and Bears traded sets, but the Panthers were able to prevail and remain undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play.
After a convincing first set victory, the Panthers stumbled in the second set, recording a .194 team attack percentage and 7 errors.
The Panthers responded to the second set loss with a match leading 19 kills in the third set. The Bears led the majority of the set but the Panthers fought back and tied the set at 20 and rallied to take the final points.
The Panthers dropped the fourth set, forcing the deciding fifth. The Bears went up early with the Panthers recording 8 errors in the final set and a .037 attack percentage. After the 8 point bench change, the Panthers came out ready to rally and that is exactly what happened, propelling the Panthers to a 17-15 fifth set victory.
Piper Thomas led the team in kills, recording 22 and a team high .463 attack percentage. Three Panthers finished the night with double digit kills, Piper Thomas (22), Jaydlin Seehase (21), and Karlie Taylor (16).
Rachel Koop finished the five set thriller with 60 total assists and added 9 digs and 4 kills on the night. Karlie Taylor led the team in digs with 19, followed by Kendyl Sorge (18), and Baylee Petersen (13).

The Panthers now look ahead to the Bulldogs of Drake University. The Bulldogs make the trip to Cedar Falls on Friday, October 19 for a 7 p.m. match in the McLeod Center. The Bulldogs are 16-7 overall and 5-4 in MVC play after a 3 set victory over Southern Illinois Saturday night.
