CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling will protect its perfect Big 12 record against No. 15 South Dakota State Sunday.
"We look forward to South Dakota State. They have a great environment up there and a great arena," said head coach Doug Schwab. "I know they've got their fans excited about the sport. I know they get big crowds, and that's perfect."
It will be the second top-15 team UNI has faced this month after coming off a loss to No. 10 Arizona State at the Virginia Duals. The Sun Devils also handed SDSU a loss in November.
"They've done a good job of building the program. They are going to come out ready to scrap, and we're going to have to match that," Schwab said. "We are going to have match that energy, and not just match it but raise it."
The Jackrabbits' second loss of the season came to Minnesota at home. SDSU will host Wyoming this week before facing UNI.
UNI leads the series that dates back to 1954. The Panthers are 38-3-1 against the Jackrabbits. UNI is 4-0 against SDSU under Schwab. The teams' last meeting was in 2014 and ended with a 29-12 win for UNI.
Fans will see two top-20 matchups at 174 pounds and 197 pounds. It will be a rematch at 197 pounds. SDSU's No. 9 Nate Rotert eliminated Jacob Holschlag from the 2017 NCAA championships with a 4-1 decision.
It will be the first time assistant coach Cody Caldwell will face his former team. Caldwell wrestled for Schwab and the Panthers from 2012-2016.
