
UNI Notches 3rd at 2017 MVC Championship

LEMONT, Illinois – The University Northern Iowa men's golf team finished the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in third place with junior Sam DeBartolo earning all-league honors.
UNI posted a three-round total of 899 (295-304-300) on the Cog Hill #4 "Dubsdread" Golf Course. Wichita State claimed the team title with a total of 883, while Illinois State nabbed second place with a three-round total of 888.
The Panthers entered the tournament picked to finish seventh, but instead earned the program's eighth top-four finish (and fourth top-three finish) since joining the MVC in 1991-92.
Junior Sam DeBartolo fired the lowest round of the day with his 70 on Tuesday. He had scores of 75-75-70--220 ( 4), which put him in a tie for third place. He moved from the 11th spot in round one to come within two strokes of finishing first. The effort earned him an all-Missouri Valley Conference spot. He had eight birdies in the tournament, including three in the first round and four in the third round.
Senior Dustin Atkinson finished the tournament 11th with scores of 73-78-74--225 ( 9). At the end of the first round, he was tied for fifth, three shots behind first place. Atkinson finished the first round with three birdies, one in the second round, and another three in the third.
Sophomore Davis Sutton who was tied for 29th after the first day, finished tied for 21st with scores of 81-75-76--232 ( 16). He also had an impressive second round that moved him up from a 39th place tie. Sutton had three birdies in the first round, two more in the second round, and three in the third round.
Redshirt sophomore Marshal Lamb finished tied for 21st as well with round scores of 76-76-80--232 ( 16). He was tied for 17th after the first day of competition. Lamb had four birdies throughout the tournament. Lamb's 3.08 stroke average on the par threes tied him for third in the field.
Senior David Spengler finished the MVC Championship tied for 29th with round scores of 71-78-85--234 ( 18). Spengler was leading the Panthers through the first day with the score of 149 ( 5) and was tied for seventh place. He started tied for third after opening the tournament with a career-best round of 71. It also marked the first time in his collegiate career at UNI that he broke par in a round. He had three birdies and an eagle in the first round. In the second round, he added two more birdies to his score.
Defending champion Trent Wallace of Illinois State won the tournament with scores of 70-75-73--218 ( 2).
