UNI Gets Defensive in Win Over Chicago State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team turned up the defensive nob on Saturday in the McLeod Center as the Panthers posted an 82-44 win over the Chicago State Cougars.
UNI (3-1 overall) held its third straight opponent to 45 points or less and enjoyed a +20 rebounding margin over Chicago State (1-4 overall). The Cougars were limited to 31.5 percent shooting from the field, including 26.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
The Panthers began the game on a 15-1 run and closed the the first half on a 17-2 run en route to a 46-21 lead at the half. UNI shot 60.7 percent in the first half. UNI led by as many as 27 points before the intermission.
Chicago State could not cut the margin to less than 22 in the second half and UNI eventually led by as many as 38 in the contest.
UNI senior Bennett Koch recorded his fifth career 20-point scoring game as he led the way with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
UNI freshman Tywhon Pickford corralled a game-high 14 rebounds and added eight points, two assists, two blocks and two steals to his stat line. Pickford was one rebound shy of the record for rebounds in the McLeod Center by a UNI player. Grant Stout, Jordan Eglseder and Seth Tuttle each recorded 15 rebounds to set the Panther standard for rebounding in the McLeod Center.
UNI sophomore Juwan McCloud tied his career high with 18 points and he also handed out four assists. UNI junior transfer Miles Wentzien posted his first career NCAA Division I double-figure scoring game with 11 points off the bench.
UNI will be back in action Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. against SMU in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
