CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team recorded a home-opening victory over the Alcorn State Braves on Monday in the McLeod Center, 73-45.

Sophomore Juwan McCloud poured in a career-high 18 points, while senior Bennett Koch and freshman Tywhon Pickford each tallied double-doubles to help the Panthers pick up their first win of the 2017-18 season.

Pickford scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive side of the glass. Koch tallied 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

UNI came out blazing by making six of its first seven shots from 3-point land as the Panthers built a 16-point lead nine minutes into the contest. Pickford drilled a 3-pointer to cap an 18-0 run with 10:36 left before the half. UNI would lead by 10 at the break, 37-27.

The Panthers used a decisive 21-5 run in the second half to turn a 44-32 lead into a comfortable 65-37 advantage with 7:15 remaining in the game.

UNI buried 15 3-pointers in the contest and shot 55.6 percent from 3-point land.

UNI will be back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center when the Panthers take on the Wartburg Knights.
