Missouri State Knocks Off UNI, 4-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State Bears posted a 4-3 victory over the University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team on Sunday in Missouri Valley Conference dual action.
Missouri State moves to 10-10 overall and 2-1 in MVC play, while UNI drops to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in league play. It is the sixth time this season that UNI has fallen 4-3 in a dual match.Â
UNI took the early lead by sweeping the three doubles matches to obtain the doubles' point. It marks the fourth time this season that the Panthers won all three doubles matches. It also marks the fifth time this season that UNI secured the doubles point.
UNI's No. 1 doubles team of Jieke Stroobant and Elvira Lopez posted a 6-3 win over MSU's Ema Turudija and Miranda Poile.
UNI's No. 2 doubles team of Astrid Santos and Gisela Kemper recorded a 6-4 victory over MSU's Anelisse Torrico an Phoebe Boeschen.
At No. 3 doubles, UNI's Sydney Wolfe and Eve Small capped the sweep with a 7-5 triumph over MSU's Abbey Belote and Faty Khamissi.
Missouri gained the upper hand in singles play by winning matches at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. However, the Panthers would battle back with a trio of three-set matches in which the dual winner would be decided.
UNI's Kemper scored a three-set win at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 triumph over MSU's Khamissi. Santos came back from a set down at No. 3 singles and scored a 1-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3) win over MSU's Torrico.
With the dual tied at 3-3, it came down to the result at No. 2 singles between MSU's Poile and UNI's Lopez. Poile won the first set, 6-4. Lopez battled back to take the second, 6-4. Poile then posted a 7-5 triumph in the third set to win the match for the Bears.
UNI will be back in action next weekend with matches at Southern Illinois (Saturday) and Evansville (Sunday).
