DES MOINES, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa battled the Drake Bulldogs on Saturday in the Missouri Valley Conference women's tennis opener for both schools. Drake was able to score a 5-2 win over UNI in a dual that featured a trio of three-set matches.
Drake fielded a smaller lineup which limited the Bulldogs in doubles' play to only two squads. UNI would have to win only one of the two contested matches to take the doubles' point. But the Bulldogs were able to secure the point by earning two tight victories. At No. 1 doubles, Drake's Maddie Johnson and Joely Lomas scored a 6-4 win over UNI's Jieke Stroobant and Elvira Lopez. At No. 2 doubles, UNI's Astrid Santos and Gisela Kemper rallied from a 5-3 deficit to tie Summer Brills and Tess Herder at 5-5 in the deciding match. The Bulldogs' duo was able to withstand the late push from the Panthers and hung on for a 7-5 victory giving Drake the doubles' point. UNI's Sydney Wolfe and Eve Small won by default at No. 3 doubles.
The No. 1 singles match came down to a third-set tiebreaker with Drake's Maddie Johnson scoring a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) win over UNI's Jieke Stroobant. Johnson won the opening set, 6-2. Stroobant rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the second set and eventually forced a tiebreaker and won it to push the match into a third set tiebreaker. Johnson then posted a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker.
Elvira Lopez played her seventh three-set match of the season against Drake's Summer Brills at No. 2 singles. Brills rolled to a 6-0 win in the opening set, only to see Lopez come back and score a 6-2 win in the second set to even the matchup. Brills jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set. Lopez won back-to-back games to close within 3-2, but Brills closed out the set, 6-3. Lopez is now 4-3 in three-set matches this season.
