UNI Loses Early Lead to #12 Virginia Tech to Fall, 19-15

BLACKSBURG, Virginia – UNI led through seven weights before No. 12 Virginia Tech took the lead and the eventual 19-15 win.
Despite winning half the matches, it wasn't enough to overcome bonus points Virginia Tech won at 125 pounds and 184 pounds. UNI got wins from:
UNI fell to 2-5 overall with the loss to Virginia Tech (8-2). The Panthers tweaked their lineup by moving Trevor Jauch and Drew Foster up a weight.
Jauch got the momentum started. The senior moved up from 141 pounds to take on Virginia Tech's Sal Mastriani, a returning NCAA qualifier, at 149 pounds.
Jauch started the second period with 2:47 in riding time and led 2-0. Midway through the second, he earned nearfall points and the penalty point for Mastriani's stalling. Jauch got his second stall warning late in the second to close the gap, 5-1.
With 4:47 in riding time, Jauch started the third period on top and gave up the escape and got another stall call on him to close it up 5-3. Another takedown early in the third period pushed Jauch's lead to 7-3. Two more nearfall points and 5:34 in riding time gave UNI the match at 10-3.
The Hokies' Jake Spengler got the first attack at 157 pounds with a takedown early in the first period. Steiert escaped to keep the gap close to start the second 2-1 in favor of Spengler. Steiert earned a reversal then quickly gave up an escape early in the second to tie it up 3-3.
Steiert's takedown gave him 59 seconds of riding time and the 5-3 lead to start the third. Spengler chose to start neutral, and Steiert extended his lead 7-3 with a takedown early in the third period. Steiert released Spengler with 30 seconds left in the match. He got a final takedown and 2:13 in RT to win 10-4.
No. 8 Cooper Moore got his first dual loss at 165 pounds, losing to No. 19 Dave McFadden, 11-5.
Lux got the Panthers back in the win column at 174 pounds. He led David Bergida 2-0 after the first period. His nearfall points near the end of the second pushed his lead to 4-0 to start the third. Lux escaped early the third. Another takedown right away helped him secure his riding time. Lux earned 2:49 in riding time and went on to win 8-2.
Drew Foster moved up from 174 pounds to wrestle No. 14 Zack Zavatsky at 184 pounds. Zavatsky notched the first bonus points of the night to beat Foster, 13-2. The bonus points closed the team scoring 9-7.
At 197 pounds, Bartel got his first points with an escape and takedown early in the second. He released Austin Gabel, keeping the score close at 3-1 to start the third. Another escape early in the third period gave Bartel the 3-2 decision over the two-time NCAA qualifier.
The heavyweight match between UNI's Cabell and No. 3 Ty Walz was scoreless after the first period. Cabell escaped early in the second but gave up a takedown about midway through the period. Cabell escaped to tie it back up after just 19 seconds. Cabell gave up the escape very early in the third to give Walz the 3-2 lead. A takedown at the end of the match, gave Walz his first victory over Cabell, 5-2.
No. 3 Joey Dance pinned Leighton Gaul to give the Hokies their first team lead of the night, 16-12.
No. 17 Alber gave up a takedown to Dennis Gustafson late in the first to start behind 2-0 in the second. Alber started on top and erased all riding time but gave up an escape before he could earn his own in the second period. Gustafston led 3-0 to start the third. An early escape in the third closed the gap, 3-1. With just about a minute left, Alber got the takedown he needed to tie it up. Four nearfall points pushed his lead to 7-3, and riding time gave him the 8-3 decision.
With one match to go at 141 pounds, UNI trailed 16-15. No. 11 Solomon Chishko secured the Hokie win with an 8-2 decision over UNI's No. 19 Jake Koethe.
#12 VIRGINIA TECH 19, UNI 15
Old Dominion opens its official MAC season on Alumni Weekend. ODU dropped a dual to Kent State, 23-13, at the final day of the Virginia Duals last weekend. The Monarchs have four wrestlers ranked in the top 20.
There will only be one rematch on the day. Alber will be looking to avenge a loss to Emilio Saavedra of Old Dominion at 133 pounds. Saavedra beat Alber at the Midlands Championships.

125: Leighton Gaul (7-6)- After starting at 133 pounds last year, Gaul is back in the lineup at 125 pounds as a sophomore. He tied for first at the Buena Vista Open this year and took second at the UNI. He is looking for his
- Junior Brandon Jeske (9-6) is a two-time NCAA qualifier ranked fourth in the MAC.
133: No. 18 Josh Alber (22-5)
- Alber will get a rematch from the Midlands Championships, where he took second. The champion, Emilio Saavedra of Old Dominion, cracked the MAC rankings and bumped Alber out of the top four. He will have a chance to avenge the 4-2 loss that came in the second sudden victory.
The redshirt freshman has three top-20 wins with decisions over No. 12 Josh Martinez of Air Force and No. 20 Anthony Giraldo of Rutgers two times. - No. 14 Saavedra (15-4) became ODU's second wrestler to capture a Midlands title when he beat Alber in the second sudden victory, 4-2. He is ranked third in the MAC.
141: Trevor Jauch (13-6) or Jake Koethe (23-8)
- Koethe is one of seven Panthers with wins over top-20 opponents. He cracked the national rankings this week after an 8-4 decision over No. 15 Steve Bleise of Northern Illinois. He beat No. 17 Anthony Abidin of Nebraska, 8-4, at Midlands in late December. He has won the Buena Vista Open two years in a row.
Jauch is one of four Panthers leading the team in falls. His biggest pin was against No. 15 Jamel Hudson of Hofstra. He notched three more en route to winning the Cobber Open and grabbed two more at the Midlands Championships. - No. 9 Chris Mecate (12-3) is a senior with three NCAA tournaments under his belt. He took sixth last year to earn his first All-American honor. He is the conference leader at 141 pounds.
149: Jake Hodges (11-8) or Trevor Jauch (13-6)
- Hodges started for UNI at 141 pounds last year and has competed the early part of the season at the lighter weight. He tied for first at the Buena Vista Open. He made his dual debut last weekend against Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois.
- No. 8 Alexander Richardson (12-3) is a senior who has competed at the NCAA tournament three times. He was seventh last year. He holds the MAC's top ranking at 149 pounds.
157: No. 20 Bryce Steiert (14-6)
- Steiert cracked the national rankings last week after another top-20 win. He beat No. 18 Tyler Berger of Nebraska at the Midlands Championships. Steiert has wins over No. 12 Dylan Cottrell of West Virginia and No. 17 Eleazar DeLuca of Northern Colorado.
Despite staying perfect in last week's duals, he dropped out of the rankings. He is now ranked fourth in the MAC.
He took sixth at the Cliff Keen Invite in early December. - Senior Devin Geoghegan (9-7) has an Iowa connection. He took second at the NJCAA in 2013 while competing for Iowa Central Community College.
Austin Eads (11-9) has wrestled at 149 pounds and 165 pounds for the Monarchs. He is a sophomore.
165: Taylor Berger (4-5) or No. 8 Cooper Moore (7-5)
- Moore is the reigning conference champion. He is a two-time national qualifier and took eighth at the Cliff Keen this year. Moore is ranked second in the MAC.
Berger started the year in the lineup at 165 pounds, going 1-2 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals. Both losses were to top-15 opponents. - Seldon Wright (13-9) is a freshman. He won the 160-pound title at state as a prep in Virginia.
174: Drew Foster (11-10) or Kyle Lux (5-2)
- Foster was second at the Cobber Open this year and won the Joe Parisi Open last year. He is 11-9 on the season and looking for his first dual win. He and Lux have split time in the dual lineup.
Lux also has wrestled at 165 pounds and 184 pounds for the Panthers. He won this year's Finn Grinaker Cobber Open. - Sophomore Brooks Climmons (6-8) won two state championships as a prep athlete in Georgia. He spent a year at the Olympic Training Center upon high school graduation.
184: Cody Caldwell (8-9) or Drew Foster (11-10)
- Caldwell is a returning NCAA qualifier. The senior took fourth at the MAC tournament as a sophomore to earn an automatic bid to the national tournament at 174 pounds. He moved to the 184-pound weight class as a junior.
- Junior No. 6 Jack Dechow (7-1) is a two-time NCAA qualifier. He was fourth at the NCAA tourney as a redshirt freshman in 2014. He has won the MAC Conference Championships two years in a row and is currently ranked second in the conference.
197: Jared Bartel (5-7) or Cody Krumwiede (8-6)
- In 2013-14, Bartel represented the Panthers at the MAC tournament as a redshirt freshman after wrestling one dual. He lost 3-2 to Scott in sudden victory and took sixth. He competed in three duals as a sophomore the next year. He is 1-3 in duals this year, splitting time with Krumwiede. He has faced five opponents in the top 20 so far this year.
Krumwiede is coming off a recent win at the UNI Open. He lost his only dual for the Panthers this season. The senior moved down from heavyweight last season. - Senior Austin Coburn (5-11) moved up from wrestling 174 pounds last year. He was the starter at that weight. He went 8-10 in duals
285: No. 15 Blaize Cabell (11-6)
- Cabell is the conference leader and two-time NCAA qualifier. He has a top-10 win over Billy Smith of Rutgers. His undefeated dual record last season made him eighth among all Panthers with the most dual wins in a single season. In his MAC dual opener, Cabell notched 12 takedowns against James Romero of Missouri.
Cabell is the MAC leader at this weight. - ODU will have one of two freshmen at this weight with Andrew Snyder (2-10) or Andrew Pacheco (5-9).
LAST YEAR AGAINST OLD DOMINION
