
UNI Notches Top-10 Finishes At Early Bird Invite

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa cross country program opened its season at the Hawkeye Early Bird Invitational this evening, with seven top-25 finishers between the men's and women's teams.
"I was pleased with how both teams executed the race plan tonight," head coach Dave Paulsen said. "This was a great meet to start off the season and we are looking forward to the next two weeks in preparation for our next competition."
Shane Kirchoff kicked off his senior campaign with a top-10 finish in the men's 6,000 meters. His time of 19:20.20 was good enough for an eighth place finish out of 46 competitors.
Trai Bunch was UNI's second runner through the finish line, coming in 20th place overall with a time of 19:34.70. Sophomore Mitch Pritts came in right behind Bunch in 21st place, recording a 6K personal-best time of 19:37.40.
On the women's side, the Panthers were led by Kelsey Kirchoff and Brette Correy, who both finished in the top-10. Kelsey notched a sixth place finish in the women's 3K, grabbing a time of 10:32.30. Correy was able to score an eighth place finish with a time of 10:37.10.
Rounding out UNI's top-25 finishers were Tara Jackson and Hanna Martin. Jackson came away with a 22nd place finish and a time of 10:56.50 while Martin finished in 25th place overall, adding her time of 10:58.60.
The UNI cross country team will return to action Sept. 19 when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the Nebraska Invitational.
