UNI Earns Third Straight Shutout, Defeats UND 2-0

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer earned their third straight shutout on Sunday afternoon, defeating North Dakota 2-0. The Panthers (4-2-3) picked up both of their goals in the second half as they fired eight shots with five on goal during the final 45 minutes. Whitney Blunt was credited with her fourth shutout of the season, passing her career-high of three shutouts in a season that she set last year.

After a defensive first half, UNI put the pressure on UND and earned a penalty kick early in the second half. Brynell Yount played a ball into the box and was fouled by the opposing goalkeeper to earn the Panthers a penalty. The Panthers called on Katie Witt and she delivered, putting one in the bottom right corner of the net. Witt's penalty was the first made by a Panther since Chelsie Hochstedler scored from the spot against Creighton in 2009.

"We needed a goal obviously to kind of break it open a little bit," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "It could have gone all the way to overtime 0-0 again so the penalty kick came at the right time for us."

The Panthers earned their second goal of the contest 20 minutes later on a free kick sent in by Witt. Yount was able to keep the ball alive, directing it to Maggie Riley for her first goal of the season.

"At halftime we said we were playing pretty well and we were doing all the things we wanted to, we just have to do them a little bit better," said Price. "We talked about defending a bit (at half), we just wanted to get tightened up a little bit. We wanted to be more decisive in the final third than we were in the first half. I think we did all of those things and in the end it was a good game for us."

The Panthers will begin a three game road trip beginning with South Dakota State on Friday. Kickoff in Brookings, SD is scheduled for 6 p.m.
