WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team remained unbeaten to open up the 2015 campaign as they shut out Eastern Illinois 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (2-0-2) were held scoreless for the majority of the first half until Katie Witt found the back of the net off a Morgan Teel throw-in for her first goal of the season with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Annie Dale picked up her fourth goal in as many games two minutes into the second half, sliding to direct the ball on goal via a through ball from Sarah Brandt. Dale's streak of four straight games with a goal tied the UNI record for most consecutive games with a goal set by Chelsie Hochstedler in the 2008 season.
"She a forward that's scoring goals," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "She's very confident and in the right place at the right time. A lot of her goals are kind of scruffy, scrappy goals but it doesn't matter it all counts the same. She's very confident right now and that's a nice trait to have for a forward"
Maddie Welch picked up her second goal of the season with 1:23 remaining in the contest to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead and help seal the win on a ball sent into the box by Kelsey Hansen.
"It's nice to score goals and keep a shutout but there were times when we were a little bit sloppy and we've got to be careful with that," said Price. "Other times we were pretty good. We've just got to find some consistency in our play and not allow teams to come back into games when we don't want them to. Now we have to get ready for Tuesday and it's going to be a completely different type of game. We're going to have to rest our bodies and get our minds right for a very tough Iowa team."
UNI will get tomorrow off before heading to Iowa City, Iowa to take on in-state rival Iowa 7 p.m. Tuesday.
