CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - For the second straight game to open up its 2015 campaign, the University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team played into overtime. This time, the Panthers rallied late and tied up Southeast Missouri State twice before the game ended in a 3-3 draw.
The Panthers (1-0-1) found themselves down early as the Redhawks picked up their second goal with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
"We got off to a really slow start and didn't compete at the way we need to at this level," said UNI head coach James Price. "We conceded two goals from corners which is very disappointing."
Annie Dale put UNI on the board in the 52nd minute, scoring just under the crossbar from 15 yards out on a pass from Maggie Riley. Dale's goal marked her second of the season as she finished with four shots on goal. The Panthers tied it up at 2-2 in the 67th minute as Katie Witt found Maddie Welch in the box off the corner kick.
"The second half was much improved in terms of intensity and desire and we deservedly got back level," said Price.
The Redhawks followed up with their third goal of the game 12 minutes later, scoring on a header to regain the lead 3-2.
After finding themselves down, the Panthers bounced back once against as Mary Brandt found the back of the net on another corner kick. Haley Kerns picked up the assist on the corner, her first of the season.
"We had to come from behind again to equalize and had a few chances to win it in OT, but overall a fair and good result," said Price.
UNI will get the next four days off before they head to Omaha, Neb., to take on Nebraska-Omaha Friday at 5 p.m.
