Senior Annie Dale scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers just five minutes into the first overtime.
WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team opened up regular season play with a 1-0 win over Green Bay in overtime on Friday evening. Senior forward Annie Dale scored the game-winning goal just minutes into the first period of overtime play, capitalizing on a misplayed ball by the Phoenix and putting it into the back of the net.
"When you're at home and you go into overtime you always want to try to find a way to win," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "It was all about can we get forward? Can we get a chance? Neither team really created a good chance. We scored with a bit of luck, a hustle play with a bit of luck and I actually thought either team could have won that way."
ÂUNI's best chance at getting on the board in the first half came when Maggie Riley played a through ball over the defenders to freshman Meredith McManaman, who put the ball on net after a touch before it was saved by the Green Bay goalkeeper. McManaman had a game-high two shots on goal on two attempts for the Panthers.
Â"We've got some very quick freshman," said Price. "If they can just be a bit more direct and go to the goal when they get in, they'll have a good season because there's hardly anybody that can catch them. Sometimes they get indecisive or they check back and then it's a little harder for them to score. I thought they played really well but there's a few things decision-wise that they've got to do a little better. There's only way to do that's play a game and kind of learn as you play."
The Panthers will continue non-conference play on Monday when they head to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to take on Southeast Missouri State.
