
Panthers Dominate Sycamores, 59-13

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa football team dominated the Indiana State Sycamores on Saturday, picking up a 59-13 victory. The Panthers are now 5-4 overall and 3-3 in league play.
The Panthers scored 28 points in the first half and held the Sycamores to just 69 total yards of offense, ultimately sealing the win early. Aaron Bailey was a part of five of UNI's eight touchdowns, rushing for four and throwing for one.
The junior finished the game 8-13-0 for 114 passing yards while adding 54 yards on the ground on 22 carries. On defense, Karter Schult racked up seven total tackles, including three for a loss of yards. Isaac Ales had six tackles along with a forced fumble while both Tim Kilfoy and Jamison Whiting took home pick-sixes.
Senior Michael Schmadeke put the Panthers up 3-0 with 9:26 on the clock in the first quarter, converting on a 27-yard field goal attempt. His ninth field goal of the season ended a seven-play, 41 yard drive that took 2:59 off the clock.
UNI's second scoring drive was set up by a key 46-yard punt return from Makinton Dorleant to land the Panthers in scoring territory. After some hard fought yards from Tyvis Smith to get UNI to the one-yard-line, Bailey snuck it in to put UNI up 10-0 with 4:47 left in the quarter. The drive lasted 1:50 for five plays and 19 yards.
Bailey punched his second rushing touchdown in early in the second quarter, giving UNI a 17-0 lead with 11:56 on the clock. His one-yard rushing score ended a 4:00 drive for 10 plays and 70 yards.
The Panthers continued to extend its lead when Kilfoy picked up his first pick-six of the season, taking it 30 yards to the end zone to give UNI a 24-0 lead with 10:56 left to play in the half. It was UNI's third interception return for a touchdown this season and the third of his career.
UNI took a 31-0 lead over the Sycamores with less than three minutes to play in the second quarter when Michael Malloy dove across the goal line for a 10-yard rushing touchdown. It ended a 3:05 drive for seven plays and 48 yards.
Dorleant had his hand in helping UNI's fifth touchdown of the game, forcing and recovering a fumble to put UNI on the Indiana State 11-yard-line. Bailey was then able to score his third rushing touchdown of the game to put UNI 38-0. His two-yard rushing score ended a 57 second drive that lasted three plays and 11 yards with 1:09 on the clock in the second quarter.
Indiana State was able to jump on the scoreboard with 7:57 remaining in the third quarter when wide receiver Kelvin Cook dropped back for a pass, connecting with Robert Tonyan for a 12-yard touchdown, making the score 38-6 after a missed PAT. It ended a 4:29 drive for nine plays and 80 yards.
Bailey continued his short-yardage dominance late in the third quarter, scoring another rushing touchdown to put UNI up 45-6 with 2:25 on the clock. His six-yard rush into the end zone wrapped up a 5:32 drive for 11 plays and 71 yards.
The Sycamores attempted to get some offensive rhythm going with less than a minute to play in the third quarter, driving 75 yards for just five plays. Matt Adam linked up with Sam Levingston for a 42-yard passing touchdown to end a 1:31 drive, making the score 45-13.
UNI added another touchdown with 5:20 left in the game when Bailey was in sync with Charles Brown for a 10-yard receiving score to give UNI a 52-13 lead. The scoring drive lasted 6:20 for 11 plays and 58 yards.
The Panther defense continued to dominate later in the fourth quarter when Jamison Whiting picked up a 77-yard interception return for a touchdown. It was UNI's second pick-six of the game, making the score 59-13 with 4:24 remaining.
UNI will return to action when they take on Missouri State on the road. The game is set for Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m.
Post-Game Notes vs. Indiana State
- Captains against Indiana State: Isaac Ales, Jacob Rathmacher, Braden Lehman and Tim Kilfoy
- Aaron Bailey scored four rushing touchdowns against Indiana State, tying for the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game and total touchdowns in a game. It was the first time a Panther has rushed for four touchdowns since Tirrell Rennie accomplished the feat against Illinois State in 2011.
- Tim Kilfoy's pick-six in the first quarter against Indiana State was his third-career interception return for a touchdown, tying him for second all-time at UNI with Ray Mitchell (2013-14).
- With his interception against Indiana State, Deiondre' Hall now has 12 in his career, tying him for fifth all-time at UNI with Jason McCleary (1991-94) and Duane Petersen (1988-91).
- The UNI defensive line continued to dominate the Missouri Valley Football Conference, holding Indiana State to just 46 yards rushing. They are just one game removed from holding South Dakota to 54 yards rushing, the second lowest this season.
- The last time UNI scored 50 or more points was in 2014 when they defeated Tennessee Tech, 50-7. The last time UNI scored 50 or more points in a conference game was against Indiana State in 2009, beating the Sycamores 62-7 in the UNI-Dome.
