WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Evansville in their Missouri Valley Conference home opener on a breezy Saturday afternoon. The Panthers (5-5-3, 1-1-0 MVC) finished with five shots in the contest.
Three of those five shots came for UNI in the first half as both teams were kept scoreless. Whitney Blunt had three of her six saves in the first half and came up big in a pressure situation for the Panthers just under 10 minutes into the half. After an Evansville attacker got past the UNI defense, Blunt came up with a diving save to keep the Aces off the board.
Â"That's what it's all about at this point in the season, getting those points. The wind didn't lend itself for
Â"That's what she's there for," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "She's an experienced goalkeeper now so we need her to limit the amount of mistakes and come up with some big saves. That's where she's at in her career, she doesn't make many mistakes and she comes up with some big saves."
ÂBrynell Yount scored her first collegiate goal to put the Panthers ahead with 9:35 remaining. Yount received a pass into the box from Sarah McHugh and was able to head it over the keeper and into the back of the net.
Â"The first half we were second best and the second half I thought it was a more even game," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "I thought if we could find a way to score it was going to be the difference."
The Panthers will continue home play on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. against Illinois State on Fan Appreciation Day. Fans will receive raffle tickets and have a chance to win prizes during halftime.
