WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team set a new program record for most shutouts in a season with eight on their way to defeating Saint Ambrose 3-0 on senior night.
"We've had a lot of injuries back there too which normally suggests that you're going to struggle," said UNI Head Coach James Price. "All of them defend really well individually and I think over time they've kind of gelled as a unit. We have some good depth which we knew going into the season. We really didn't want to use all the depth but we've ending up having to do that. All the girls that go in there are really good one v. one, they don't like getting beat one v. one. Then it's just a question of forming a unit so they can help each other if they do get beat. We've got some good experience back there and having a good goalkeeper back there helps with that."
The Panthers (6-7-5, 1-2-2 MVC) got on the board first as Katie Witt found the back of the net for the fourth time this season in the 25th minute. Witt headed a ball sent in on a corner kick from Amber Nieland, finding the left side of the net for the goal.
"Typical senior night the way we started, a little sloppy and lacking concentration," said Price. "I think once the game settled down and we actually made a few subs and it kind of changed the game. Obviously Katie's goal changed the game quite a bit. They had chances to score the first goal and it could have been a completely different game. We got our noses in front and from there we really had control of the game the whole time."
UNI would get another goal in the half to take a 2-0 lead as Marianne Gagne tracked down the ball in the Saint Ambrose box before sending it off a defender and into the net for her second goal of the year.
Brynell Yount capped off the game with a goal in the 78th minute, finding the back of the net on a ball that was deflected to her by Camille De La Cruz.
The Panthers will resume Missouri Valley Conference play on Thursday when they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on Loyola. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
