TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State University Sycamores held on for a 3-2 victory over the University of Northern Iowa Panther volleyball team on Friday at ISU Arena. Indiana State won by set scores of 25-17, 25-16, 20-25, 20-25, 15-9.
UNI saw its five-match win streak snapped as Indiana State secured its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season. The Sycamores improve to 12-6 overall and 1-2 in MVC play, while the Panthers drop to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in the MVC.
Indiana State came out strong and scored victories in the opening two sets, 25-17 and 25-16. As a result, UNI came out of the intermission with a couple of changes that turned around the Panthers' fortunes in the third and fourth sets.
UNI moved junior Amie Held into a six-position player and out of the libero slot. Freshman Kendyl Sorge took on the libero duties with the move of Held to her spot. Held posted her first career double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Sorge nearly tied a career-high with 18 digs. With Held and Sorge playing in new slots, the Panthers turned the match around and scored identical 25-20 wins in the third and fourth sets.
However, Indiana State was able to start strong in the fifth set by opening up a 5-2 lead. UNI closed to within 9-7, but could get no closer and Indiana State posted a 15-9 win in the fifth set.
UNI will be back in action Saturday at 7 p.m. in Normal, Ill., against the Illinois State Redbirds.
