WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team won its sixth consecutive home match to begin the 2014 season with a 5-2 dual win over Chicago State on Thursday at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
UNI (6-6 overall) won all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and give the Panthers some much needed early momentum.
"Doubles has been key for us all year and that was certainly the case again today," head coach Daniel Finn said. "It fueled us into singles."
The Panthers then took four of the six singles matches. Erica Medlin won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Elvira Lopez tallied a 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 3 singles. Astrid Lopez secured a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and Krissy Lankelma netted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 singles.
"We started slow but despite that we finished strong and took care of business," Finn said. "Anytime you don't play well and are able to win, you have to be happy with the result at the end of the day. I still think the Air Force match from Sunday took a lot out of us and the quick turnaround from that tough of a match was a lot to overcome."
Chicago State fell to 3-9 overall on the year.
"Tomorrow with be a tough day for our ladies with back-to-back matches in the afternoon," Finn said.
UNI will be back in action on Friday with a pair of home duals against South Dakota State (12 p.m.) and Upper Iowa (3:30 p.m.).
NOTES: UNI can match its longest home-court win streak on Friday since an 8-0 start to the 2008-09 season ...
