Panthers Finish Strong at MVC Championships

Carbondale, Ill. -- The University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team finished strong in the last day of events at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
Prelims
1650 Freestyle
Senior Reva Bork was the top Panther finisher in the 1650 prelims. Bork placed fifth with a time of 18:16.89. Alesha Rettenmeier and Lindsey Phelps finished seventh and eigth respectively.
200 Backstroke
Natalie Johnson and Sierra Sachtjen placed 15th and 17th in the 200 backstroke prelim. Johnson's prelim time was 2:06.70.
100 Freestyle
Aftin Phyfe placed fifth in the 100 freestyle prelim. The fresman's time of 52.21 was good for second on the UNI all-time record list.
200 Breaststroke
Freshman Veronica Herrmann was UNI's top finisher in the 200 breaststroke prelim. Herrmann's time of 2:21.24 broke an eleven year old school record. Stephanie Paape, Jill Georgen and Sarah Hedeen placed 12th, 15th and 17th respectively.
200 Butterfly
Sophomore Taylor Ostrowski placed seventh in the 200 butterfly prelim. The sophomore's time of 2:07.56 was quick enough to land her the second spot on the all-time top ten. Stephanie Jackson and Kayla McCormick placed 11th and 12th respectively.
Finals
3 Meter Diving
Allie Bey and Sarah Kemp placed sixth and eigth in the 3 meter diving finals. Freshman Ashlyn Clingman had a strong first showing at the conference tournament, placing 9th with a dive total of 257.60
1650 Freestyle
Reva Bork, Alesha Rettenmeier and Lindsey Phelps finished 13th, 15th and 16th respectively. Bork's 13th place finish was in a time of 18:16.89, good enough for a season best time.
200 Backstroke
Natalie Johnson closed out her outstanding Panther career with a personal best 2:05.69. The senior placed 13th in the 200 backstroke finals.
100 Freestyle
Ashley Nelson, 54.52, Miki Freese, 53.03 and Aftin Phyfe, 51.61, each finished with personal best times in the 100 freestyle. Phyfe finished in fifth place and re-broke her school record.
200 Breaststroke
Freshman Veronica Herrmann finished in fifth place and re-broke her 200 breaststroke record with a final time of 2:20.84. Jill Georgen and Stephanie Paape moved into 3rd and 4th place respectively in school history with their final times of 2:24.19 and 2:24.84.
200 Butterfly
Taylor Ostrowski placed in fifth with a time of 2:06.00, good for second on the all-time list. Stephanie Johnson and Kayla McCormick finished 9th and 12th respectively.
400 Freestyle Relay
Mikki Freese, Riley Morgan, Natalie Johnson and Aftin Phyfe placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with a school record time of 3:30.38. Senior Kristin Grimoskas, Kathleen Varner, Rebecca Ortmann and and Alexa Klimes finished with a final time of 3:46.79.
FIVE PANTHERS SELECTED FOR MVC ALL-CONFERENCE 2ND TEAM
Veronica Herrmann (Freshman-Backstroke), Aftin Phyfe (Freshman-Freestyle), Taylor Ostrowski (Sophomore-Butterfly), Sarah Kemp (Sophmore-Diving) and Allie Bey (Sophomore-Diving) were selected to the Missouri Valley All-Conference 2nd team.
PANTHERS ARE RECORD BREAKERS
Multiple Panther swimmers have broken school records this season...
- Freshman Veronica Herrmann finished in fifth place and broke the 11 year old school record in the 200 breaststroke at the MVC Championships with a final time of 2:20.84.
- Mikki Freese, Riley Morgan, Natalie Johnson and Aftin Phyfe placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay at the MVC Championships with a school record time of 3:30.38.
- Freshman Aftin Phyfe placed 5th at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship prelims. Her final prelim time of 23.72 broke the previous school record for the 50 freestyle.
- The team of Mikki Freese, Elise Drewsen, Riley Morgan and Aftin Phyfe finished in fifth place and broke the UNI school record in the finals of the 200 yard freestyle relay with a finals time of 1:35.57.
- The team of Natalie Johnson, Jill Georgen, Taylor Ostrowski and Aftin Phyfe captured a fifth place finish in the finals of the 400 yard medley relay. Their final time of 3:51.28 was a new school record, defeating the previous record from 2011 that Senior Natalie Johnson was also a member of.
- The team of Natalie Johnson, Veronica Herrmann, Morgan Riley and Aftin Phyfe took home second place in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.33. The time was a season best and a new school record.
- Freshman Aftin Phyfe finished fifth in the 100 freestyle at the MVC Championships and broke her school record with a time of 51.61.
- Freshman Stephanie Jackson took second place in the 400 yard IM, finishing with a time of 4:32.56. Jackson broke the 400 yard IM school record and obliterated the team's season best 400 yard IM time by nearly seven seconds.
