Wrestling to Face Purdue, Indiana Tech in 2014 Dual Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – UNI wrestling gets it dual season underway on the road when it faces Indiana Tech and Purdue Sunday.
UNI was the only Division I team to finish the dual season undefeated last year, 13-0.
WRESTLING PURDUE
The UNI-Purdue series dates back to 1929, with UNI leading 14-4. The Boilermakers finished 39th at the NCAA tourney last year and are coming off a 30-9 win over Cal Poly.
UNI beat Purdue 21-12 last year and placed 15th at the NCAA tournament. The Boilermakers have one nationally ranked wrestler.
UNI hosted Purdue Feb. 16, 2014, and won 21-12.

UNI LINEUP
- 125 – UNI returns sophomore All-American Dylan Peters. Peters has an undefeated start (4-0) after winning the UCM Open last weekend, notching two falls and a tech fall. He had 18 falls last season putting him fourth on the all-time list for pins. He is ranked sixth in the nation.
- 133 – No. 15 Levi Wolfensperger is the lone senior expected to start this weekend. Two years ago, he reached the Round of 12 at the NCAA tournament, just missing an All-American spot. He is a two-time NCAA qualifier. He went 5-0 to win the UCM Open last weekend. Wolfensperger now has 30 career falls, which ties him for sixth on the all-time list for UNI.
- 141 – Jake Hodges is expected to compete in his first dual as a Panther. He took sixth at the last weekend's UCM Open, earning a fall and two tech falls.
- 149 – Zach Witte moved down a weight class this season and finished third at the UCM Open last weekend. He earned a major decision and lost a decision dual last year.
- 157 – Jarrett Jensen returns for the Panthers at 157 pounds. He battled back after losing a second-round match to take third at the UCM Open (7-1).
- 165 – Sophomore Cooper Moore is ranked 11th in the nation and returns at 165 pounds after winning the MAC Championships last year for an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. He got four falls at the UCM Open to take third. Purdue is expected to wrestle Pat Robinson, who Moore beat 6-1 last year.
- 174 – UNI will wrestle Kyle Lux or Curt Maas. Junior Kyle Lux took fifth last weekend at the UCM Open and wrestled two duals last year.
Curt Maas moved up a weight class this season to win the UCM Open last weekend. He got a major decision and fall. This could be his first dual for UNI. Purdue has listed two wrestlers at 174 pounds. Maas' quickest career fall came at the Midlands Championships against Purdue's Chad Welch at 1 minute, 15 seconds. - 184 – NCAA qualifier Cody Caldwell moved up a weight class and won his first tournament at 184 pounds last weekend. He earned a major decision, tech fall and fall at the UCM Open. Caldwell may have the opportunity to avenge a 4-2 loss to Patrick Kissel of Purdue. The Boilermakers also have Tanner Lynde listed at 184 pounds.
- 197 – Jared Bartel's only dual for UNI was against Purdue's Braden Atwood. Bartel lost 7-5 to then No. 12 Atwood. Purdue's senior is currently ranked eighth in the nation. Bartel won the UCM Open title last weekend. He took sixth at last year's MAC Championships.
- 285 – Junior Blaize Cabell is ranked second in the MAC, but beat out the conference's top-ranked wrestler for a third-place finish at the UCM Open last weekend. He qualified for nationals after placing third at the MAC last season.
PURDUE LINEUP
- 125 – Aaron Assad (5-5) is looking for his first dual win with Purdue. The redshirt freshman opened with a loss to Cal Poly's Yoshito Funakoshi.
- 133 – Purdue will have either junior Danny Sabatello or sophomore Kyle Ayersman. Sabatello moved up a weight class last and placed eighth at the Big 10 Championships to qualify for the NCAA tourney. Sabatello comes in with a 7-1 record. Ayersman wrestled four duals for Purdue last season and has a 9-3 record.
- 141 – Senior Nick Lawrence enters the dual with an 8-3 record. Lawrence pinned Cal Poly's Connor Kim in less than 4 minutes. He took second at the Roadrunner Open.
- 149 – Purdue has senior Brandon Nelsen (9-2) and sophomore Alex Griffin (9-4) at 149 pounds. Nelsen beat out Griffin for third at the Roadrunner Open. Griffin got a tech fall for Purdue in its dual against Cal Poly beating Jacob Leon, 17-0 (4:51).
- 157 – Junior Doug Welch moved down to 157 pound last year. He only wrestled 12 matches last year before an injury ended his season. He starts out 6-2 this year with a dual win. He was sixth at the Roadrunner Open.
- 165 – Junior Pat Robinson's only loss came at the Roadrunner Open, where he finished third. He is 5-1 on the season. He lost last year to UNI's Moore, 6-1.
- 174 – Chad Welch (7-5) gave Purdue one of just three losses against Cal Poly in the team's opening dual. The junior qualified for the NCAA tourney at 174 pounds as a freshman. He wrestled at 165 pounds last year. He placed fifth at the Roadrunner Open. Redshirt freshman Jacob Morrissey (9-3) is a three-time state prep winner from Wisconsin.
- 184 – Two Purdue wrestlers are slated at 184 pounds. Senior Patrick Kissel (9-3) wrestled at 184 pounds as a sophomore. Last season at 174 pounds, he beat UNI's Caldwell, 4-2. Kissel wrestled in Purdue's opening dual, winning 12-10 over Nick Fiegener. Purdue also has sophomore Tanner Lynde (5-2) listed. Lynde wrestled 13 of 14 duals for Purdue at 184 pounds last year.
- 197 – Senior Braden Atwood is Purdue's only nationally ranked wrestler. No. 8 Atwood (4-0) is a three-time NCAA qualifier. He took sixth at the Roadrunner Open and won his first dual of the season.
- 285 – Sophomore Tyler Kral (5-4) lost his first dual as a Boilermaker to Nick Johnson of Cal Poly, 7-4. He took sixth at the Roadrunner Open.
For the first time ever, the Indiana Tech wrestling team was ranked first in the East Region, helping them maintain their eighth position in the first regular-season edition of the NAIA Wrestling Coaches' Top 20 poll.
The Warriors have eight wrestlers in the top-16.
