
Panthers Defeated by No. 11 Iowa State in Record Breaking Home Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa-The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team fell to No. 11 Iowa State in a close match at the McLeod Center on Wednesday night, 3-2.
The Panthers set a new single match attendance record of 6,621. The previous record was 6,490 and was set on September 13, 2011 against Iowa State.
Eryca Hingtgen and Shelby Kintzel led the Panthers with 14 kills each and Kintzel had a .464 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell recorded 43 assists and 19 digs for UNI. Courtney Kintzel had eight blocks on the night.
Iowa State got out to an early 6-0 lead in the first set. A kill by Eryca Hingtgen got the Panthers on the board at 6-1. The Cyclones took over the match and at the second timeout of the set ISU had the lead at 14-6. That was the closest UNI got as Iowa State won the set 25-13.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the second set, the Cyclones went on a 4-1 run to take the lead at 8-5. Blocks by Courtney Kintzel and Brittany Nelson helped the Panthers fight back to tie it up at 8-8. Iowa State turned it around and went on another 4-1 run to make it 12-9 at the first timeout of the set. The Panthers kept it close throughout the rest of the set, but they could not catch the Cyclones. Iowa State won the set 25-20 and took the match lead at 2-0.
The Panthers turned the tables in the third set when they took the early 3-1 lead. Iowa State answered with a 5-3 run that tied it up at 6-6. A kill by Shelby Kintzel helped and attack errors by Iowa State helped the Panthers regain the lead at 9-6 at the first timeout of the set. UNI held the lead until the end of the match when it was all tied up at 21-21. A service error by Iowa State, a service ace by Caldwell, and back-to-back kills by Macy Ubben helped UNI to win the set 25-21 and make the match score 2-1.
At the first timeout of the fourth set, Iowa State had the 7-4 lead. Three kills by both Eryca Hingtgen and Leigh Pudwill helped the Panthers fight their way back to tie it up at 12-12. An attack error by the Cyclones gave UNI the 13-12 lead, but Iowa State answered with a kill in the next play to tie it back up at 13-13. The match went back and forth like this until it was tied at 16-16, and the Panthers went on a 3-0 run to take the lead at 19-16. UNI proved too much for the Cyclones in this set, and the Panthers won it 25-21 to tie the match at 2-2.
In the fifth set, Iowa State jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. The Panthers fought to bring the match to within two at 11-9, but they could not pull through. Iowa State won the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.
The Panthers will return to the court on Friday when they play Wisconsin at 4:30 p.m. in the first match of the NDSU Doublewood Inn Classic in Fargo, N.D.
