UNI Earns Thrilling Comeback Win over Missouri State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team came back from a 0-2 deficit to defeat Missouri State 3-2 on Saturday night in the McLeod Center. The Panthers are now 2-1 in MVC play.
Eryca Hingtgen had a career high 17 kills for the Panthers, and Courtney Kintzel led with a .406 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell had a season high 59 assists and Macy Ubben recorded 14 digs.
The score was tied at 8-8 in the first set when a bad set by Missouri State gave the Panthers the 9-8 lead. A kill by the Bears in the next play tied to set again at 9-9. The score went back and forth several more times until it was tied at 12-12. A kill by Missouri State helped start a 6-0 run by the Bears and give them the 18-12 lead. The Panthers could not answer and Missouri State won the set 25-14.
With the score tied at 9-9 in the second set, a kill by Courtney Kintzel helped spark a 5-0 run to give the Panthers the 14-9 lead. Missouri State slowly came back and tied the score up at 18-18. A kill by Macy Ubben gave UNI the 18-18 lead, but Missouri State answered with a kill in the next play to tie it up at 19-19. The set went back and forth until finally it was tied at 23-23. An attack error by the Panthers and a kill gave Missouri State the 25-23 set win and the 2-0 match lead.
UNI had the 6-5 lead in the third set when a kill by Shelby Kintzel helped start a dominant 8-0 run for the Panthers to help them take the 13-5 lead. The Panthers cruised through the rest of the set and won it 25-15 and make the match 2-1.
In the fourth set, the score was tied at 11-11 when an attack error by Missouri State and a kill by Courtney Kintzel gave the Panthers the 13-11 lead. The Bears answered with their own 2-0 run to tie it up at 13-13. The set went back and forth until the end when it was tied 21-21. Three attack errors by Missouri State and a kill by Ubben gave the Panthers the 25-21 set win and tied the match up 2-2.
UNI took the early 6-3 lead in the fifth set. The Panthers increased their lead to six at 13-7 and didn't look back from there. UNI won the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
The Panthers will be back in the McLeod Center on Tuesday night at 6:00 when they take on South Dakota State.
