
UNI Falls to Utah State in Day Two of Utah Classic

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team fell to Utah State 3-1 on Saturday morning in Salt Lake City, Utah. This was second match for the Panthers at the Utah Classic.
Courtney Kintzel had a career high 20 kills and .459 hitting percentage for the Panthers. Kinsey Caldwell recorded 45 assists and four service aces, and Macy Ubben notched a career high 22 digs for UNI.
The score was tied at 2-2 in the first set when Utah State went on a 6-1 run to make it 8-3 at the first timeout. Kills by Shelby Kintzel and Caldwell helped bring the Panthers to within four at 11-7, Utah State. The Aggies regained the momentum and increased their lead to 19-12 at a UNI timeout. Utah State won the set 25-18.
In the second set, the score was tied at 7-7 when a kill by Shleby Kintzel gave the Panthers 8-7 lead. UNI then went on a 3-0 run to make it 11-7 at the first timeout. Back-to-back kills from Courtney Kintzel helped give the Panthers the 13-9 lead. UNI then took off and went on a 12-0 run to win the set 25-9 and tie the match at 25-9.
UNI and Utah State kept it close in the third set. Utah State had the 6-5 lead when a kill by Eryca Hingtgen helped the Panthers tied it up at 6-6. UNI then went on a 4-1 run to take the lead at 10-7. Utah State turned the momentum around and went on a 3-0 run to tie it up at 10-10. The score went back and forth until it was tied up at 19-19. A kill by Utah State helped propel them to 6-0 run to win the set 25-19 and take the 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set was another close one for UNI. Utah State had the 7-3 lead in the set when a kill by Courtney Kintzel helped spark the Panthers. They fought their way back and tied it up at 12-12. The set continued to remain close and eventually was tied at 21-21. Two kills and an attack error by UNI gave Utah State the 24-21 lead. The Panthers could not answer, and Utah State won the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
The Panthers play again tonight when they take on Utah at 7 in their last match of the Utah Classic.
