Panther Netters Fall Short vs. Jackrabbits, 4-3

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision on Saturday to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The match took place indoors at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
UNI (1-2 overall) started the dual match strong by taking two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
UNI's No. 1 double duo of Phoebe Walker and Krissy Lankelma put on a dominating form and rolled to an 8-0 win over SDSU's Ffion Davies and Jenny Blackburne. The Panthers' No. 2 doubles team of Chelsea Moore and Jessica King had to sweat it out and pulled out a 9-8 tiebreaker triumph.
The Panthers then needed to split the singles competition to take the win. But the Jacks were able to rally and took four of the six singles matches.
UNI's Walker won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles over Florencia Magni. Moore also prevailed in her No. 3 singles match in a thrilling three-set victory over SDSU's Blackburne.
The Jackrabbits turned the tables on the Panthers at No. 2 singles when SDSU's Davies rallied from a 6-0 loss in the first set to Lankelma. Davies won the second set, 6-4, to force a third and deciding set. Davies took a commanding 5-3 lead, but Lankelma rallied and eventually took a 6-5 lead in the final set. Davies answered back with a strong serving game to force the third-set tiebreaker. Davies was able to gain the victory with a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker.
UNI will be in action again Sunday at 1 p.m. against Green Bay.
NOTE: Walker's win in doubles was her 72nd career doubles victory, moving her to within one win of No. 5 on the Panthers' all-time doubles' wins list ... Tami Williams ranks No. 5 all-time in UNI doubles' wins with 73 from 1983-87.
