UNI Drops Contest Against UTSA, 63-55

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team dropped a 63-55 contest against the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners tonight in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.
Madison Weekly led the Panthers with a career-high 18 points. Brooke Brown added 12 points to the UNI score while Hannah Schonhardt led the team in boards with eight.
The Panthers started the game with a 3-2 lead over UTSA heading into the first media timeout after Brooke Brown streaked into the lane for a layup. The Roadrunners were then able to build a 13-5 lead, converting four free throws and sparking a 6-0 run with 11:33 left in the first half.
Alyssa Johnson sliced UTSA's lead to just one point with 8:16 on the clock, finding her way into the lane for a layup and knocking in her free throw to make the score 15-14. The Roadrunners took a 16-point lead at the 2:35 mark when Mannasha Bell notched a layup to give them the double-digit lead.
Ty Smith put a stop to the UTSA run after making a strong run through the lane, getting fouled in the process. She then hit her free throw, making the score 32-17. UTSA was able to go into halftime with a 37-20 lead after Weekly scored a free throw for the Panthers' last points of the first half.
UNI cut the Roadrunner lead to just 10 points with 12:40 left in the second half after Brittni Donaldson knocked down two free throws to make the score 40-30. UTSA lengthened its lead to 13 points when Bell found herself in the lane for a layup, but Brown hit two free throws at the 8:12 mark for the Panthers to make it an 11-point game at 47-36.
Weekly cut down the UTSA lead again with 5:12 left in the game when she finished a layup, making it a seven-point game. The Roadrunners took another double-digit lead with 2:54 on the clock after Ashley Spaletta hit a jump shot, but Erin Dohnalek found herself a layup to cut it back down to a 10-point deficit, making the score 54-44.
Weekly made it a seven-point game again for the Panthers, scoring her 18th point of the game to make the score 56-49 with 1:42 left in the game. UTSA hit seven free throws to make the score 63-51 with less than a minute remaining.
Dohnalek scored four straight points to put UNI within seven points, but UTSA was able to secure its 63-55 win with UNI unable to make up the gap. The Panthers will return to action tomorrow at 10 p.m. when they take on University of Texas-Pan American in their final game of the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.
Post-Game Notes vs. UTSA
Madison Weekly scored a career-high 18 points against the UTSA Roadrunners. She finished 10-of-12 from the free throw line and four made field goals.
Brooke Brown finished with a season-high 12 points. She was 8-of-9 from the free throw line against UTSA.
UNI shot a season-high 33 free throws against the Roadrunners. They also finished with a season-high 24 made free throws.
Hannah Schonhardt led the team with eight rebounds.
