UNI Falls 67-60 In Battle Against Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team battled to the last second against the Iowa Hawkeyes, but fell to their instate foe 67-60.
Erin Dohnalek hit a three-pointer to put UNI within four points with 1:03 left in the game, but Iowa was able to sink three free throws in the final minute to clinch their victory.
Amber Sorenson led the Panthers with a career-high 15 points, finishing the game with five three-pointers. Stephanie Davison added 12 points while Hannah Schonhardt grabbed a team-high 10 boards.
UNI trailed 10-3 with 15:49 left in the first half after the Hawkeyes went on an 8-0 run started by two free throws from Samantha Logic. Iowa turned it into an 11-0 run, but Sorenson drained a three-pointer to swing the momentum back to the Panthers, making the score 13-6.
The Panthers cut the Iowa lead to two points with 8:44 left. Davison converted on two free throws to make the score 16-14. After Iowa was able to knock down two free throws of their own, UNI cut the Hawkeye lead to 18-16 when Davison found Alyssa Johnson under the basket for a quick layup.
Iowa took an eight-point lead after Ally Disterhoft hit a three-pointer, but Sorenson notched back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 26-22 and put UNI back within four points with 5:13 left in the first half.
Brittni Donaldson put UNI within a point with 1:27 left after sprinting full throttle, getting a steal and an uncontested layup after Disterhoft turned the ball over, making the score 30-29. The Hawkeyes went into halftime with a 33-29 lead.
Iowa started the second half on a 9-0 run sparked by a jumper from Bethany Doolittle in the first fifteen seconds. Jen Keitel scored the Panthers first points of the half on a turnaround jumper, cutting the Hawkeye lead to 42-31 with 16:47 on the clock.
Madison Weekly scored five straight points to give the Panthers some offensive momentum, followed by Sorenson draining her fourth three-pointer of the game to put UNI within four points of the Hawkeyes. Iowa held the 46-42 lead with 11:12 left in the second half.
UNI cut the Hawkeye lead down to five at the 6:43 mark when Sorenson hit a three-pointer to make the score 54-49. UNI kept its deficit at five a minute later after Weekly finished a layup while falling to the ground for a 56-51 score.
After a run by the Hawkeyes, Davison got UNI back within five points after getting into the lane for a layup, making the score 62-57 with 2:01 on the clock. Dohnalek knocked down her three-pointer to put UNI within four, but the Panthers were unable to close the gap, eventually falling 67-60.
Post-Game Notes vs. Iowa
Amber Sorenson scored a career-high 15 points against Iowa. She also played a career-high 22 minutes.
Stephanie Davison scored in double-figures for the fourth game this season, and her second consecutive game. The sophomore finished with 12 points.
Hannah Schonhardt had a team high 10 boards, tying for a game-high total.
Madison Weekly tied her career-high of nine points against Iowa. She also notched three assists.
UNI's bench outscored the Iowa bench 32-21.
