UNI Picks Up 86-82 Win Over NDSU In Fargo

FARGO, N.D. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team picked up its second win of the season Wednesday night, defeating North Dakota State 86-82. The Panthers improved its overall record to 2-2.
Redshirt freshman Erin Dohnalek drained a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the game to give UNI the lead. Jen Keitel and Ty Smith converted on three free throws to help clinch the 86-82 victory for the Panthers.
Keitel led the team with a career-high 24 points and 12 boards while Hannah Schonhardt and Stephanie Davison added 14 and 18 points, respectively.
North Dakota State went on an 8-2 run to start the game before Davison found her way into the lane for a layup to make it 8-4 with 17:28 left in the first half. The Panthers then cut the Bison lead to within two just a minute later after the sophomore nailed a three-pointer, making the score 11-9.
Schonhardt put the Panthers within one point with 13:58 on the clock after she drained a three-pointer. The sophomore followed it up with a jump shot and a made free throw to put UNI up 19-17, giving UNI its first lead of the game.
Schonhardt sparked a 19-2 run by the Panthers lasting from the 13:58 mark to the 7:38 mark when Bison forward Marena Whittle ended the UNI run, giving UNI the 32-22 lead.
North Dakota State cut the Panther lead to two points with 2:48 on the clock after Brooke Lemar knocked in a three-pointer, keeping UNI's lead at 40-38. Hannah Breske then tied the score 40-40 after hitting a jumper with 2:08 left in the half. Lemar was able to tie the score at 44-44 on a layup and then put in her free throw to give NDSU a 45-44 lead at halftime.
UNI tied the score heading into the first media timeout of the second half after Ty Smith converted on two free throws to make the score 50-50 with 16:31 on the clock. The Panthers notched its first lead of the second half after Brittni Donaldson finished two free throws, followed by one from Madison Weekly to put UNI up 55-54 with 13:40 left in the game.
The Bison took a 70-61 lead after Emily Spier hit a jumper with 8:00 on the clock. Schonhardt knocked down a free throw to cut the NDSU lead to 70-62, but Lemar was able to notch a layup seconds later, giving North Dakota State a 72-62 lead with 6:36 left.
Erin Dohnalek cut UNI's deficit to four points at the 3:44 mark after driving for a layup to make the score 76-72. With 1:02 left in the game, Davison scored her second three-pointer of the game to cut the Bison lead to 81-80, putting the Panthers within one.
Dohnalek put down another three-pointer with less than a minute to play, followed by two free throws by Keitel and one by Smith to seal the Panthers' 86-82 victory.
Post-Game Notes vs. North Dakota StateJen Keitel scored a career-high 24 points and added 12 rebounds against the NDSU Bison. This was Keitel's second double-double in her career at UNI.
Stephanie Davison has scored in double-figures three times out of the four games this season. She has already matched her double-figure number from the 2012-13 season.
Hannah Schonhardt scored a season-high 14 points against NDSU and played a season high 32 minutes.
UNI outscored its opponent in second chance points for the third time this season. The Panthers outscored NDSU 16-11 in the category.
UNI tied its season-high team steal number at 10 tonight against NDSU. They also notched 10 against North Dakota.
UNI shot a season-high 74.1 percent from the free throw line, converting on 20-of-27
