
UNI Takes Down Illinois State, 3-1

NORMAL, Illinois- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 3-1 on Thursday night in Normal, Illinois. The Panthers are now 12-3 in the MVC, while the Redbirds fall to 9-6 in the Valley.
Courtney Kintzel led the Panthers with 15 kills, and sister Shelby Kintzel led with a .417 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell tallied 40 assists, and Amie Held recorded 17 digs for UNI.
UNI jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first set. Kills by Courtney and Shelby Kintzel and Macy Ubben helped the Panthers increase their lead to six at 18-12. UNI held onto the lead the remainder of the set and won it 25-21.
With the score tied at 8-8 in the second set, a block by Courtney Kintzel and Eryca Hingtgen sparked a 9-3 run by the Panthers to take the 17-11 lead. Illinois State slowly started to catch up with UNI until the score was tied at 23-23. An attack error by the Panthers and a service ace by the Redbirds gave Illinois State the 25-23 win in the set and tied the match at 1-1.
UNI had the early 10-6 lead in the third set. Illinois State came back and tied the set up at 15-15. An attack error and a bad set by Illinois State gave the Panthers the 17-15 lead. The Redbirds came back again and tied it up at 18-18. The set went back and forth until it was tied at 22-22. A kill by Courtney Kintzel started a 3-1 run to give UNI the 25-23 set win and the 2-1 match lead.
The score was tied at 13-13 in the fourth set when back-to-back attack errors by UNI gave Illinois State the 15-13 lead. A service error by Illinois State helped the Panthers go on a 4-2 run which allowed them to tie the set at 17-17. A kill by Eryca Hingtgen in the next play gave UNI the 18-17 lead, but the Redbirds answered with a kill in the next play to tie it at 18-18. A kill by Courtney Kintzel sparked a 7-2 run gave the Panthers the 25-20 set win and 3-1 match victory.
UNI returns to action Saturday night when they take on Indiana State on the road at 6:00.
