Panthers Lose in OT to Purple Aces, 2-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Evansville Purple Aces traveled to Cedar Falls on Sunday for a 1 p.m. conference match.
The Panthers opened up the scoring during the 33rd minute when senior Claire Clark passed to sophomore Maddie Welch at the top of the goalie box. Welch dribbled past two Evansville defenders and beat goalkeeper Simone Busby.
Northern Iowa continued their strong play well into the second half. Annie Dale, Maggie Riley, Grace Schield and Katie Witt all fired shots but were turned away by the Aces goalkeeper. Evansville evened up the score at 1 in the 73 minute when Lauren Tiernan corralled a goalie deflection for a put-back score.
With the score tied 1-1 the match went to overtime. Evansville's Lauren Tiernan received a pass from Allie Arguello at the top of the box during the first minute of OT and her shot just beat a diving Nicole Postel for the win.
The Panthers were out shot by the Aces 12 to 5. Evansville kicked six corners, UNI kicked four. Aces goalkeeper Simone Busby received the win and recorded one save. Panthers goalkeeper Nicole Postel saved six shots in her losing effort.
UNI will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Des Moines to take on in-state rival Drake. The match against the Bulldogs is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
