
South Dakota Tops UNI In Double Overtime, 38-31

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 11 University of Northern Iowa football team fell to the South Dakota Coyotes in double overtime Saturday, 38-31. UNI is now 4-3 overall and 0-3 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play.
In the first overtime, Tyler Sievertsen put UNI up 31-28 with a 33-yard field goal. South Dakota was able to convert on its own field goal though, tying the game 31-31 when Miles Bergner knocked in a 23-yarder to send it into the second overtime.
South Dakota scored on its first possession in the second overtime when Coyote quarterback Kevin Earl ran into the end zone for a one-yard rush to put USD up, 38-31. UNI was unable to score on its second overtime possession, and eventually fell to the Coyotes.
David Johnson led the Panthers with 181 rushing yards and one touchdown while Chad Owens notched 107 receiving yards and a touchdown. Jordan Gacke and Max Busher both notched eight tackles each with Sam Tim finishing with seven.
UNI got on the scoreboard quickly in the first quarter, scoring its first touchdown with 13:22 on the clock. Kollmorgen found Owens wide open for a 34-yard touchdown pass to put UNI up 7-0. The drive took 1:38 off the clock for four plays and 78 yards.
South Dakota answered at the 12:14 mark in the quarter when Coyote quarterback Earl found Riley Donovan for a 48-yard score to even the score, 7-7. The drive burned 1:08 off the clock for three plays and 75 yards.
With 12:58 left in the second quarter, junior Evan Williams found the end zone on a one-yard rush for his first touchdown in a Panther uniform. The drive took 1:56 off the clock for five plays and 65 yards.
South Dakota had two field goal opportunities with less than six minutes left in the first half, but was unable to convert on either of them, ending the first half with UNI leading, 14-7.
Williams scored his second touchdown of the game to open scoring in the second half when he broke free for a four-yard rushing touchdown with 8:36 left in the third quarter. The drive took six plays for 43 yards and 2:37 off the clock. The Panthers had a short field after USD fumbled its punt snap on fourth down.
Johnson added another touchdown to the Panthers score with 5:54 left in the third quarter when he found the end zone on a seven-yard score. The drive marked 1:17 off the clock for three plays and 14 yards set up by a second botched punt snap by the Coyotes.
With 3:12 left in the third quarter, South Dakota jumped back on the scoreboard after Earl connected with Donovan again for a 43-yard touchdown. The drive burned 2:34 off the clock for six plays and 75 yards, cutting UNI's lead to 28-14.
South Dakota cut the UNI lead again with 11:26 left in the game when Earl rushed eight yards into the end zone to make the score 28-21. The drive took four plays, 38 yards and 1:24 off the clock.
The Coyotes tied the game 28-28 with five seconds left on the clock when Earl linked up with Terrance Terry for a three-yard passing score. The drive took 1:12 off the clock for seven plays and 58 yards to send the game into overtime.
Post-Game Notes vs. South Dakota
Evan Williams scored his first touchdowns in a Panther uniform against South Dakota. The junior from Minneapolis, Minn., redshirted during the 2012 season after transferring from Iowa Western.
D.J. Hebert notched his first career reception against South Dakota. He picked up an acrobatic 16-yard reception in the second quarter, putting UNI in USD territory.
Sawyer Kollmorgen is just two touchdown passes shy from moving into a tie for No. 8 all-time at UNI for career passing touchdowns with current associate head coach Bill Salmon. Kollmorgen currently has 32 career passing touchdowns. Salmon notched 34 passing scores from 1972-72.
David Johnson is now ninth all-time at UNI in career rushing yards with 2,734. He ranks seventh all-time in career rushing touchdowns with 28. He has moved up to ninth all-time at UNI in career points scored with 240. He notched his 13th career 100+ yards rushing performance against South Dakota, finishing with 181 yards and a touchdown.
Makinton Dorleant notched his first career interception against South Dakota.
Chad Owens notched his second 100+ receiving game of his career. He finished with 107 yards and one touchdown against South Dakota.
Logan Cunningham notched a career-high 79 kickoff return yards.
Tyler Sievertsen converted all four of his extra point to set the UNI record for consecutive PATs made. Sievertsen has made all 105 of his PAT attempts in his Panther career. The previous mark was set by Brian Mitchell with 101 from 1989-1991.
