UNI Evens MVC Mark with 76-59 Win Over SIU

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 76-59 triumph over the visiting Southern Illinois Salukis on Thursday in the McLeod Center.
UNI (9-11, 4-4 MVC) were led in scoring by senior guard Jacqui Kalin's game-high 20 points. Freshman Hannah Schonhardt tallied a career-high 15 points and added nine rebounds.
The Salukis fell to 4-15 overall and 1-7 in the MVC with the loss. The Salukis were led in scoring by Cartaesha Macklin's 17 points. Rishonda Napier posted 12 points as well for the Salukis.
UNI led by as many as 16 points in the first half when it took a 32-16 lead with 5:51 left in the half. UNI built its 16-point advantage on the strength of two runs. UNI used a 13-2 run to take a 19-9 lead. The Panthers then tallied a 9-0 spurt as the Salukis were held scoreless from the 8:29 mark to the 5:34 mark of the first half.
UNI led 35-27 at the break.
The Panthers came out after the intermission and increased the lead to 19 points at 57-38 with 11:54 left in the game. SIU could only get as close as 12 points the rest of the way.
UNI will play host to the Evansville Purple Aces on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
NOTES: UNI's win snapped a two-game losing streak ... the Panthers improved to 4-4 at home on the season ... Mercedees Morgan made her first 3-pointer of the season when she drained a triple with 6:33 left in the second half against the Salukis ... it marked the third time this season Schonhardt reached double figures in scoring ... Kalin reached 20-plus scoring for the 10th time this season ... UNI outrebounded SIU, 46-29 ... UNI buried nine 3-pointers, while SIU made 3-of-15 from 3-point land ... UNI made 19-of-26 free throws, while SIU was only 10-of-19 at the line.
