
UNI Defeats Wichita State for Fifth Straight MVC Win

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team won their fifth straight Missouri Valley Conference match by defeating Wichita State 3-1 Saturday night in the McLeod Center. UNI is now 5-0 in the MVC and holds first place in the conference.
Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 16 kills, a career high for her, and Krista DeGeest followed with 14 kills. Molly Turk lead with 50 assists, a career high for her as well and Candice Burke notched 26 digs.
Wichita State jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first set. The Panthers slowly battled back until the score was tied at 14-14. A kill by Shelby Kintzel in the next play gave the Panthers the 15-14 lead. The two teams went back and forth until the score was tied back up at 24-24. UNI took the lead after a kill by Macy Ubben in the next play. A kill by the Shockers in the next play tied it up at 26-26. Another kill and a service ace helped Wichita State win the set 28-26.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the second set, an attack error by Wichita State helped spark a 7-2 run to make it 10-5 UNI at a timeout. UNI held the lead and dominated the rest of the set, winning it 25-11.
The score was tied at 4-4 in the third set when a kill by Ubben helped the Panthers go on a 4-0 run to give them the lead at 8-4. The Shockers tried but could not keep up with the Panthers. UNI maintained the lead the rest of the set and won it 25-18.
The beginning of the fourth set was back and forth for the teams. The score was tied at 7-7 when Krista DeGeest got a kill for the Panther to help them start a 6-2 run to make it 13-9. UNI kept this run up after a Wichita State timeout and increased their score to 17-11. Wichita State could not answer and UNI won the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
UNI will hit the road on Friday when they take on Creighton University at 7:00 p.m. in Omaha, Nebraska.
