UNI Suffers Tough Loss to Creighton

OMAHA, Neb.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team had to face an end to their Missouri Valley Conference win streak Friday night when they fell to the Creighton Bluejays 3-1 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Panthers' win streak was at 59 regular season MVC games and 65 overall MVC games. UNI and Creighton are now tied for first in the Missouri Valley Conference with 5-1 records.
Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 14 kills and Krista DeGeest followed with 11 kills. Molly Turk notched 45 assists and Candice Burke recorded 24 digs and a service ace for the Panthers.
The Panthers started the match off strong in the first set. They jumped out to an early lead and at the first timeout of the set, UNI had the 15-11 lead. Creighton slowly started coming back and tied the match up at 22-22. A kill by Amy Braun in the next play gave the Panthers the 23-22 lead, and two straight kills by DeGeest gave UNI the 25-22 win in the set.
The second set was a different story for the Panthers. The score was tied at 4-4 when Creighton took advantage of a UNI attack error to make it 5-4. The Bluejays took off from there and UNI could not keep up. Creighton won the set 25-13.
The third set started out tight for the teams. UNI was not letting Creighton get too far ahead and eventually tied the set up at 13-13. An attack error by the Panthers and two straight service aces gave Creighton the 16-13 lead. Kills by Megan Lehman and Ubben helped the Panthers fight back to tie it up at 19-19. Another attack error by the Panthers gave the Jays the 20-19 lead and they maintained that the rest of the set to win it 25-22.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the fourth set, Creighton took advantage of an attack error by UNI to get the 3-2 lead. The Panthers could not find their rhythm in this set and the Jays held the lead from this point on. Creighton won the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
The Panthers will return to the court tomorrow night when they take on the Drake Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. in Des Moines.
