
UNI Bests Indiana State in Conference Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team was victorious their Missouri Valley Conference opener at Indiana State on Friday night, 1-0. The game ended in the 80th minute due to weather delays.
The Panthers scored in the 78th minute when a shot from senior Melissa Hagan was punched into the air by the Sycamore keeper. Fellow senior Ashley Capone then headed the ball off of the deflection into the right side of the net for the score. Hagan was credited for an assist on the play and the lone goal proved to be enough for UNI.
Six Panthers recorded shots in the match with three of those shots coming on goal. Capone, Hagan, and freshman Sarah McHugh each put their respective shots on goal while junior Grace Schield, sophomore Shauna Happel, and freshman Maggie Riley were each credited with a shot.
The Panthers were outshot in the match, 12 to six, including a margin of five to three in shots on goal. The Panthers and Sycamores were knotted in corner kicks with one apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Zaideman tallied five saves while posting the shutout.
UNI (5-7-0, 1-0-0 MVC) will be back in action on Mon., Sept. 24, as the Panthers take on St. Ambrose University at 7:00 p.m. The match will be played at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
