
Panthers Sweep Illinois State on the Road

NORMAL, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team got the 3-0 sweep over the Illinois State Redbirds on Friday night in Normal, Illinois.
Megan Lehman led the Panthers with 13 kills and Krista DeGeest followed with 11 kills. Molly Turk recorded 34 assists and both Amy Braun and Candice Burke notched 12 digs for UNI.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the first set, a kill by Amy Braun sparked a 4-0 run by the Panthers to make it 8-4. The Redbird slowly crept back to bring the score within one at 11-10 UNI. Megan Lehman got a kill in the next play to help the Panthers go on another 4-0 run to make the score 15-10. UNI cruised through the rest of the set and won it 25-16.
UNI jumped out to an early lead in the second set. The Panthers were up 7-5 when kills from Lehman, Shelby Kintzel and Macy Ubben helped them go on a 5-2 run to make it 12-7. Illinois State was not going to give in and slowly started coming back until the score was tied at 18-18. The Redbirds took advantage of an attack error by the Panthers to go up 19-18, but a kill by Lehman in the next play tied it back up at 19-19. UNI took over from there, and Illinois State couldn't keep up. The Panthers won the set 25-23.
In the third set, the score was tied at 5-5 when the Panthers took advantage of several attack errors to go on a 4-0 run and make the score 9-5. The Redbirds then went on of run of their own to tie the score up at 10-10. A kill by Molly Turk gave UNI the 11-10 lead, but the Redbirds answered with a kill in the next play to tie it back up at 11-11. The two teams went back and forth until they were tied up again at 20-20. The Redbirds got a kill in the next play to take the lead at 21-20, but UNI took advantage of an attack error in the next set to make it 21-21. The score was then tied at 24-24, and a kill by Shelby Kintzel and an attack error by the Redbirds gave UNI the 26-24 win and the 3-0 match win.
The Panthers head to Indiana tomorrow to take on the Indiana State Sycamores at 6:00 p.m.
