Panthers Open MVC Play With Win Over Bradley

PEORIA, Illinois.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team opened MVC play Friday night by sweeping the Bradley Braves 3-0 Friday night in Peoria, Illinois. This was the opening match of the CEFCU Classic on the Bradley campus.
Amy Braun led the Panthers with 12 kills and Megan Lehman followed with 11 kills. Molly Turk recorded 40 assists and Candice Burke notched 16 digs for UNI.
The Panthers got out to an early lead in the first set and never slowed down. In the first timeout of the set, UNI was ahead 8-3. The Panthers held the lead the whole set and won it 25-15.
The second set was a little closer for the Panthers. The teams went back and forth at the beginning of the match. With the score tied at 11-11, Bradley got the kill in the next play to go ahead 12-11. The Panthers took advantage of an attack error to tie it up at 12-12. UNI then went on a 3-0 run to make it 15-12 at a Bradley timeout. Kills by Braun and Lehman helped make the score 19-16 UNI. Bradley got to within one at 22-12 but the Panthers finished strong and won the set 25-22.
In the third set, UNI took the lead early but Bradley eventually tied the set up at 10-10. A kill by Bradley's Allie Falter gave the Braves the 11-10 lead. A kill by Krista DeGeest in the next play tied it up 11-11. Kills by Shelby Kintzel and Lehman helped UNI go on a 4-0 run to make it 15-11. This sparked the Panthers, and they took off from there. UNI won the set 25-19 to win the match 3-0.
The Panthers return to the court tomorrow at 1:00 when they take on Arkansas State in the second match of the CEFCU Classic in Peoria, Illinois.
