UNI Defeats Western Illinois 1-0

MACOMB, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team defeated Western Illinois in a physical battle on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
The Panthers overcame a slow start and scored their lone and decisive goal in the 53rd minute when junior Claire Clark hit freshman Maddie Welch in the box. Welch pushed the shot off of the left post and in to the back of the net for the score.
The Leathernecks outshot the Panthers 14 to eight in the game but shots on goal were even at four a-piece. UNI held the advantage in corner kicks, four to three.
Freshman Sarah McHugh put both of her shots on goal in the match while fellow freshman Maggie Riley recorded one shot on goal. Senior Kiki McClellan tallied three shots on the afternoon and sophomore Katherine Young chipped in with a shot for the Panthers.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Zaideman turned away four Western Illinois shots in the match, posting UNI's second shutout of the young season.
The Panthers will be back in action on Fri., Aug. 24 when they travel to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
