Jarred Herring, a senior sprinter on the University of Northern Iowa track & field team, has been honored as the 2012 recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference Elite 18 Award as the league's top student-athlete in outdoor track & field, as well as being named UNI's spring recipient of the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
Herring (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) ran 10.44 seconds in the 100m dash on May 13 to win his third MVC title in the event. He became only the seventh athlete in league history to win the 100m dash at least three times, having taken the championship in 2009 and 2011 as well.
Herring also anchored the UNI 4x100m relay team that defended its MVC title in a time of 40.28 seconds.
A psychology major, Herring owns a 3.63 cumulative grade point average. He is a 10-time All-MVC performer in track & field and was named to the CoSIDA academic all-district football squad as a receiver in 2011.
Herring also garnered the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award on the strength of his performance in the classroom and his community involvement, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Elite 18 Award Program was established by the Missouri Valley Conference in Fall 2010 to honor the highest achievement in academics and athletics by a student-athlete in each MVC-sponsored sport. In track & field, the award goes to the top-three placewinner with the highest cumulative grade point average.
In order to be eligible for the Good Neighbor Award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees.
